What Are The Odds?

Shadow and Osuna decide to make a bee-line to the buggy and make their escape, leaving Thea stranded on the desert floor. Upon arriving at the buggy, Road Wraith manages to score a direct hit on the pair with a grenade launcher. Osuna takes the brunt of the blast, the shrapnel disintegrating his armor and perforating his lungs. Though Shadow manages to dispatch a Jackal who tried to deal the killing blow to Osuna, Shadow knew he could not hold them all back forever. With the hapless pair being surrounded and Osuna on Death's door, Road Wraith offers to spare the runners (at least for the moment) and allow them to become prisoners of the gang. Just after this offer is made, Osuna succumbs to his wounds. Realizing the full extent of Jackal hospitality, Shadow chooses death, which Road Wraith says he will oblige. However, Road Wraith's grenade launcher failed to properly cycle the cylinder and while it does not provide enough room for the grenade to travel, the firing pin is still able to strike the primer. In the blink of an eye Road Wraith and his bike vanish in a pillar of fire. [GM NOTE: This was the result of a freak roll of 1 and then 10, and 29 damage (3 6's)] The Jackals are predictably dumbstruck by the freak turn of events. After a few beats, Lynx and Road Wraith's underling, Skulladillo, steps forward and offers Shadow a deal: Skulladillo will tell Crackfang that the Cruzer driver foolishly attempted to take out Road Wraith and Lynx with Quizkid acting as a saboteur. Shadow will cut Skulladillo into Road Wraith's market deal in return for letting the runners live. It's as good a deal as they were likely to receive that day, so Shadow accepts. Skulladillo radios back to base and calls in a salvage team. The Jackals depart with departed Osuna's body, while the rest of the runners return to the Cruzer's camp to deliver the news...
